COLE

I didn’t want to leave Harlow this morning. It’s not because I don’t trust my brothers; I would put my own life in their hands. It’s because I knew the moment I walked out the door I would miss her, and I don’t know how I feel about that.

On the drive to the ferry, Ryder didn’t mention anything about the way I said goodbye. I would have deserved every little bit of ribbing from the way I teased him when Amara came back.

Instead, he waited until we were out in the middle of the bay before asking me about her. He probably wanted to make sure I had nowhere to run away to, although I considered jumping ship and swimming the rest of the way in.

There wasn’t much to say.

It’s still new.

We don’t know each other well enough yet.

Blah, blah, blah.

It was all bullshit, and we both knew it. Those are the things you say when someone hits you the right way and you’re too afraid to own it for fear you’ll lose it the next time you turn around.

I’ve never been afraid of losing someone who wasn’t family before.

I drove through Seattle with new eyes. There’s something here that is a threat to Harlow, and I need to find out what it is.

As much as I didn’t want to leave her, I have to admit: I thoroughly enjoy coming to see the guy we are about to meet up with.

The walking poster child for delusional paranoia, he calls himself Dark Webb because his last name is Webb. For someone who is so worried that the government is trying to take him down, I don’t know why he would make his literal last name part of his secret code name.

I think if I had a code name, it would be something like Dirty Nutsack. That way, when I was taken down, the media would have to print that and say it on the six o’clock news, but I digress.

I like this guy, I think as we wait in silence to be buzzed into his lair. I don’t dare say it out loud. He’s probably got everything bugged, and I don’t want to risk our good standing with him. We need his help, and he’s the best at what he does.

Ryder stands behind me in a huff. My brother has been trying to get on Dark Webb’s good side for years, but he’s not having any of it.

The door buzzes and opens on its own. Webb isn’t there to meet us. We still have some screening to get through, and I step inside in silence and walk down the hall toward a modified body scanner. It’s homemade with wires and lights. I’m half convinced it doesn’t actually work.

A voice comes through an intercom. “Do you have any guns?”

Ryder mutters a curse under his breath. His voice is laced with frustration as he points to the metal contraption we just walked through. “Isn’t that what your little x-ray time machine here is supposed to pick up?”

I turn and smack him in the chest and try real hard not to laugh.
